Prison Movies that Set us Free

Watching a movie about incarceration and horrendous acts of violence can be disconcerting, but nonetheless compelling. Audiences flock to the cinema or look for free movies to watch online in order to witness the protagonist’s triumph over the evil antagonist or prison system. These films take us out of our comfort zone to momentarily set us free from the doldrums of daily life. Here are some titles that should be in any film junkie’s bucket list.

In the Name of the Father (1993)

Daniel Day-Lewis plays Irish citizen Gerry Conlon who is falsely accused of an IRA bombing and imprisoned with his father played by Pete Postlethwaite. Conlon’s struggle escalates after his father dies in prison. Conlon’s retribution is complete when he and his father are acquitted with the help of his advocate played by Emma Thompson.

Mega Piranha: A Modern Twist to a Primal Predator

The 2010 film "Mega Piranha" brought to life the piranha's prehistoric ancestor, which was several times bigger, and aptly named Megapiranha. The only remains of this ancient fish were first found in Argentina in the 1900’s, from which scientists deduced they existed during the Miocene period (5 to 23 million years ago), and had a biting force 30 times its own weight.

Who does not like dinosaurs? Many a child has grown up playing with dinosaur figures or watching shows that feature these ancient reptiles, and it is not hard to see why. The fearsome prehistoric animals have long occupied a soft spot in the hearts and imaginations of many. The existence of dinosaurs allows people to visualise a time in history when the planet was surrounded by humongous and terrifying beasts. That dinosaurs are long extinct and only their bones survive have encouraged many to imagine and romanticise life during the reptiles’ era.
